1000 Steps Beach
Beach Experience
The beach itself is a mixture of white sand, fossilized coral, coarse gravel and polished pebbles, surrounded by green vegetation of trees and cacti. The limestone cliffs on either side of the beach give it a rugged beauty. Please note: It is advisable to wear water shoes to protect your feet from sharp pieces of coral. During the week the beach is relatively quiet, but on the weekends it can get busier with local visitors.
Public Access
1000 Steps Beach is a public beach and is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park (BNMP), the first underwater nature park in the world, established in 1979. To enter the park you need a Nature Fee, which can be easily purchased online at STINAPA Bonaire and is valid for one year.
Snorkeling and Diving
For snorkelers, 1000 Steps Beach is a true gem. The crystal clear water and colorful coral reef make it one of the best snorkeling locations on Bonaire. You have a good chance of spotting sea turtles here, as well as an array of colorful fish and coral formations. For divers, this location is also excellent. The underwater depths range from 20 to 40 meters, with a visibility of approximately 30 meters. 1000 Steps Beach is also particularly suitable for night diving and underwater photography. However, please note that it can be quite a climb up and down the stairs with dive gear, although boat diving offers an alternative option.
Sea Turtle Conservation
The sea turtles at 1000 Steps Beach are protected by the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB), which actively works to preserve these majestic marine reptiles. The STCB conducts research and takes measures to protect the turtles, so that they can continue to live safely in Bonaire's waters in the future.
Accessibility and Parking
The beach is accessible by car, scooter or bicycle, with limited parking space at the top of the cliff. Please note: Do not leave valuables in your vehicle and make sure to lock your windows and doors to prevent break-ins.
Queen's Highway
A scenic drive along the Queen's Highway along the west coast of Bonaire offers a beautiful experience, with breathtaking views of the ocean and the island. This road takes you past all the beaches and dive sites on this side of the island, making for an unforgettable drive.
